Festival Clinics range from half day hikes and climbing clinics to full day climbing classes and/or adventures!

In addition to our climbing. clinics and hikes, we'll have camp workshop around camp that will be free and you can. sign up for upon arrival!

In order. to register for a clinic or hike, you MUST already have a weekend festival pass. We are prioritizing those who are attending the festival for the weekend. If we have spots remaining we may open up to those not attending the full event.

Friday Clinics & Hikes

Wildflower Wander

w/ James Gray, D'auntie Carol & Ryan Santos

Beginner - Intermediate level hike 1-3 miles depending on wildflower bloom prior to festival.
Join James Gray, D'auntie Carole and Ryan Santos for a wander amongst the sage brush and juniper to gaze at the magical spring wildflowers. You'll learn their names, life cycles and cultural significance.

Prerequisites: None! Just make sure to have sturdy hiking shoes. Accessibility needs or concerns feel free to reach out to us!

Intro to Crack Climbing

This clinic is perfect for folks who are curious about or are looking to advance their technical skills in crack climbing! Under the beautiful basalt backdrop of the Lower Gorge at Smith Rock, you will learn techniques for climbing cracks of all shapes and sizes.

Prerequisites: Top Rope Belay proficiency preferred.

Rappelling Adventure

This day is meant for folk who want to go have a fun adventure but without the rock climbing! You'll learn how to rappel and you'll lower yourself down a 40' cliff! Then we'll travel through time and scramble through a basalt chasm!

Prerequisites: None! Be prepared for an exciting belayed rappel at heights and sturdy hiking shoes for the scramble!

Guided Sport Climbing

This guided outing is the best way for intermediate to advanced climbers to make the most of their visit to Smith Rock. We’ll introduce you to quality routes that challenge your strength, hone your technique, and build familiarity with Smith Rock’s volcanic tuff - all in a positive, queer-centered setting!

Prerequisites: Top rope belay proficiency. Ability to climb 5.9 outdoors.

Self Rescue

Whether you're a top rope hero or venturing into multipitch terrain, rescue skills are essential to being safer and more self-sufficient in the outdoors. This clinic covers self-rescue using common equipment climbers carry on a day out. We'll work hands-on to address the most common rescue scenarios, using skills like ascending a rope, assisting a stuck climber from above and below, escaping the belay, rappel techniques, and more.

Prerequisites: Top Rope belay proficiency. Outdoor anchor building and lead experience recommended, but not required.

Sport & Top Rope Anchors

One of the most important components of climbing outdoors safely is understanding how to build and clean sport climbing anchors. In this clinic, you will learn the basic principles of a safe anchor, how to set up a variety of safe sport climbing anchors, and the skills to set up and take down a top rope safely. Rope Systems for Climbing Photography

In this clinic, you'll learn how to set up a fixed rope on an anchor, and how to ascend a rope to get yourself in the perfect position for that perfect shot. This hands-on experience will be focused on rope systems for photographing rock climbing and the two different ways to ascend a fixed rope. Once everyone has mastered the rope skills, Sam will share his techniques, tips, and tricks for photographing climbing while on the wall and you'll be able to practice.

Prerequisites: Have a camera (phones welcome!), and prior top rope or Sport climbing anchor knowledge

Body Inclusive Intro to Climbing

This is a space to learn the basics of rock climbing in an environment in opposition to diet culture. All bodies are welcome, and the guide will be plus size. We will talk about different ways to move for different bodies, as well as learning how to belay and climb top ropes with a specific focus on body empowerment and judgement-free joyful movement.

Prerequisites: None! A sense of adventure and sturdy hiking shoes. Just don't bring negative body narratives or diet talk.

River, Rocks & Reciprocity: Remembering our Relationship

Interested in trad climbing but don’t know where to start? This clinic is for you. During this clinic, you will learn about all different kinds of rock protection (cams, nuts, hexes, and more), when and where to place rock protection, how to evaluate the safety of pieces you place, techniques for placing protection efficiently, and the principles of building a safe trad gear anchor.

Prerequisites: This clinic is best suited for folks who have outdoor climbing experience, lead climbing experience, and a basic understanding of top rope anchors. Our guides will provide all necessary trad climbing gear; however, you are welcome to bring your own if you would like!

Intro to Climbing

This is the comprehensive clinic for those who enjoy sport climbing in the gym and want to take their skills outdoors. You’ll learn about crag etiquette, outdoor-specific lead and top rope skills, how to build and evaluate safe sport climbing anchors, and how to safely take them down. We’ll also practice real transitions to lowering off or rappelling, to prepare you for crags that can only be accessed by leading.

Prerequisites: You should be familiar with lead climbing and lead belaying, but you don’t need to be an expert. Top rope belaying skills are required.

The Art of Climbing Photography

Come join Samuel Crossley as they share their tips and tricks to help you make a climbing image you’ll love. This clinic will focus on theory at first with Sam giving an art of climbing photography presentation. You’ll be required to submit your climbing photographs so we can review them as a group after Sam’s presentation. This will facilitate validation on what you’ve done well, and reveal specific things you can improve. After the group review, you’ll be free to make some climbing images, your chance to put what you learn to use! As a group, at the end of the day, we’ll review and celebrate the art you made!

Prerequisites: Have a camera (phones welcome!). This course is designed for intermediate photographers; beginners are welcome but may find the clinic more challenging / fast paced. Prior to the clinic, each student will submit climbing photographs for the group review.

Intro to Big Walls (Day 1)

Have you always gazed up at the tall walls of places like Yosemite Valley, and wondered how to climb them? This clinic will cover the essential skills for ascending walls that are too hard to climb without aid - that's placing and pulling up on gear, rather than making upward progress with just our hands and feet. We'll go through basics of aid climbing with and without ladders, "jugging" or ascending a fixed rope, big wall anchors, hauling your food and overnight gear in a haul bag, as well as packing and planning for multiple days on a wall.

Prerequisites: This course is for those who have some trad climbing experience, e.g. by taking an Intro to Trad course, or having gone out trad climbing with a friend a few times. No leading experience necessary.

Multipitch Systems

This clinic is perfect for those who love outdoor climbing and want to start exploring bigger, taller objectives. Together we’ll demystify the systems that can take your climbing beyond single pitch crags. Topics will include route planning, multipitch anchors, belaying from above, rope management, and strategies for efficiency.

Prerequisites: You should know how to belay someone on top rope, and we recommend some familiarity with lead climbing and lead belaying. Trad experience is not necessary, but the skills complement each other well.

If you’re looking to build confidence for your first trad lead, or working on trusting your gear when you might fall, this clinic is for you. Our mock leading session is an opportunity to practice placing gear and clipping it as you climb, with a top rope backup. Prerequisites: This course is for those who have some trad climbing experience, e.g. by taking an Intro to Trad course, or having gone out trad climbing with a friend a few times. No leading experience necessary.

Guided Multipitch Climbing

It’s time to gain some elevation! To close out a weekend of gazing at the Smith Rock skyline, this is your chance to join one of our queer guides up there on a multipitch objective. Each climb will have a maximum of 2 clients, and routes will be custom-selected for your abilities and goals.

Prerequisites: Lead belaying experience is preferred. You should be comfortable climbing 5.8 outdoors and feel prepared to spend time at heights far from the ground.
